The much anticipated 2008 Miss World pageant was held at the Sandton Convention Center in the beautiful city of Johannesburg. The eyes of the world were on one stage when Russia's Kseniya Sukhinovia captured the coveted title in a glittering, star-studded ceremony. The 2008 Miss World festival, a record breaking year in the number of contestants taking part, saw 109 beautiful and talented contestants spend an unforgettable month in South Africa. However, there could only be one winner and the applause rang out in the packed convention centre as Julia Morley, chairman of the Miss World Organisation and of the international panel of judges, announced the winner`s name. The event was witnessed by a worldwide TV audience of over 2 billion as Miss Russia was crowned by the outgoing Miss World, Zilin Zhang. Trinidad and Tobago`s Gabrielle Walcott was second runner-up and India`s Parvathay Omanakuttan was first runner-up. The other two finalists were South Africa and Angola. Although she failed to make the cut, Bahamian pageant fans still got to cheer on their girl as Miss Bahamas Tinnyse Johnson was featured prominently throughout the broadcast. The final opened with 14 minutes of African music and dance and the contestants walking onto stage wearing their dresses designed by African fashion designers. The opening sequence ended with local school children carrying all of the representative countries' flags onto the stage. The TV spectacular was hosted by top chinese presenter Angela Chow and South African celebrity, Tumisho Masha. The show told the story of the contestants' stay in South Africa, with video clips of their activities and sightseeing, including their exciting trip to safari, Mpulanga and the dazzling indian ocean and white beaches of Durban. With an amazing stage and lighting and performances from international record-breaking band Mcfly, singing 'Smile' and 'Lies', and UK pop sensation Alisha Dixon singing her latest single 'The boy does nothing', the 58th Miss World final was one of the most spectacular to date. Miss World - the final is the world's largest live annual TV event with global viewing figures topping two billion. This year the 58th final was broadcast in 187 countries and 373 TV stations.

Natalie Olivia Griffith from Barbados gave the performance of her life at the Miss World Talent Show and was voted as this year`s Miss World Top Talent, securing herself a place in Saturday`s Semi-Final. Nineteen contestants took center stage to perform live in front of an audience that included 200 school children from Soweto at the Sandton Convention Centre, as they tried to impress the judges with dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. Talent is one of the Miss World Fast Track events, so Barbados is now guaranteed a place in the Semi Final line-up in this year's 58th Miss World at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg on Saturday 13 December. Natalie Olivia Griffith, Barbados joins the other Fast Track winners. These include Alexandra Helga Ivarsdottir, Iceland who won top Sportswoman, Espinoza Marroquin Anagabriela from Mexico who was crowned Miss World Beach Beauty and Kseniya Sukhinova from Russia, who was voted as this year`s Miss World Top Model. The winner from the last remaining Fast Track event - 'Beauty With A Purpose' is still to be decided.

Local disadvantaged children were the centre of attention today as hugs and cuddles were given out in abundance by the Miss World contestants visiting Johannesburg Zoo. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that Johannesburg`s local disadvantaged children were given a fun time at the zoo with the Miss World Contestants. The highlight of the children`s day was spending time with the contestants as they laughed and joked on the grass. Earlier the children had been given a special lunch, supplied by Southern Sun, Sandton Sun Hotel. Trips were then taken around the zoo on trucks which provided opportunities to feed bananas to the chimpanzees, tree branches to the elephants and to wave to the hippos.

The Miss World Charity and Ambassadors Ball raised an incredible amount of money under the Miss World 'Beauty With A Purpose' banner. Items for auction included a stunning diamond necklace, dresses designed by JJ Schoeman - one of which was designed for Zilin Zhang, current Miss World fetched R35,000 ($3,500) - and exquisite items and memorabilia donated by the Miss World contestants from around the world. Among the items that were bid for were hand-painted pictures of Nelson Mandela and a Faberge egg. The proceeds from the auction will be donated through 'Beauty With A Purpose' to charities chosen by Julia Morley, Chairman, Miss World Limited and Lindiwe Mahlangu, CEO, Johannesburg Tourism Company. Charity work is an integral part of the Miss World ethos and is the only beauty pageant that works with each host nation to make a difference to the lives of its people. During the gala event, the names were announced of the four contestants whose projects were chosen to compete in the Beauty with a Purpose fast track from among over 100 projects executed by the competing contestants. These finalists were chosen based on the social and charity work they implemented in their home countries upon being crowned. The winner of this title will automatically advance to the Semi Finals. The finalists are: Hungary, Szilvia Freire: For working with the NEM ADOM FEL Foundation, dedicated to the awareness that handicapped and disabled people are of value to our society, and to make these individuals feel accepted. Kenya, Ruth Kinuthia: For working with a school in the slums of Nairobi mainly for students who have been orphaned by HIV AIDS, helping raise funds for the sustenance of the school, as well as being a role model for students. Mexico, Anagabriela Espinoza: For assisting the Casa Hogar of Jilotepec, "Ayuda y Solidaridad con las Ninas de la Calle", which means help and solidarity with little girls from the streets. Anagaby created a dynamic game called "Pass the Crown" where she would ask the children about their best personal quality, and then award them a tiara. Trinidad & Tobago, Gabrielle Walcott: For working with the Just Because Foundation, which works to give hope and health alternatives to children living with cancer. While working with them, she decided to create hospitable conditions for these children since the present ones were not adequate. Gabrielle helped raise about $100,000 in Charity for the creation of a new children's ward. Although her project was not chosen as a finalist, special mention was made of Tinnyse's project by Mrs. Morley during her address to the gathering. While speaking of the passion that Miss World contestants have about making a difference in their communities, Mrs. Morley drew attention to Tinnyse's mentoring programme through which some 100 high and junior high schools students were "adopted" and mentored by business and/or professional women in the country. The winner of the Beauty with a Purpose fast track will be announced during the telecast on December 13th.

December 5, 2008
Nearly all of this year's 112 Miss World contestants spent the day taking part in a range of sporting activities to see who would emerge the Miss World sportswoman of the year and automatically advance to the semifinals. The contestants were split into four groups and competed in teams called the Ekurhuleni Buffalos, Jo'burg Leopards, Tshwane Rhinos and the Sedibeng Lions. The sports activities started with each team building a boat made entirely from cardboard and plastic sheeting. Other activities included a 50-metre sprint, and cricket. Each contestant's performance was individually recorded to identify the day`s best competitor and ultimately the Miss World Sportswoman 2008. Alexandra Helga Ivarsdottir, representing Iceland in the 2008 Miss World Festival, was crowned Miss World sportswoman and received her trophy from Marc Batchelor, South Africa football striker, at Glenburn Lodge, Muldsersdrift. As Sport is one this year's Miss World Fast Track events, Iceland is now guaranteed a place in the Semi Final line-up in this year's 58th Miss World at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg on Saturday 13 December. Alexandra Helga Ivarsdottir, Iceland joins Espinoza Marroquin Anagabriela from Mexico who was crowned Miss World Beach Beauty, the first of the Fast Track events and the second Fast Track winner, Kseniya Sukhinova from Russia, who was voted as this year`s Miss World Top Model. The winners from the remaining two fast track events - 'Beauty With A Purpose' and Miss World Top Talent are still to be decided.

The Miss World contestants visited God's Window, a favourite view of the eastern escarpment in South Africa, bordering the well-known Kruger National Park. The Miss World contestants just had to take one look to understand why, with its breathtaking views, canyons, rock formations and waterfalls, this place is called 'God's Window'. Situated on the Drakensberg escarpment in the province of Mpumalanga the contestants walked up the stepped footpath along the edge of the escarpment that leads to the viewing platform, and joined together for the official Miss World photograph. High up in the mountains the Miss World contestants were driven round the vast expanse of African heartland. After following the mountain route through tree plantations the journey culminated in a leafy clearing. From here Group 1 (of which Tinnyse was a part) set off on a short walk to Lone Creek Falls in the famous Sabie River Valley. Stepping through the forest, watching out for the local wildlife the contestants drew closer to the sound of water crashing down ahead. Round the clearing and, to the delight of all, the waterfall was in full view. They had to stretch their necks to see the top, more than 206 feet above them, set among the green foliage. Whilst Dragon Butterflies, the only insect that can fly backwards, flitted around the sunken gorge the refreshed Group 1 headed back to the leafy clearing for a much appreciated lunch.

Despite the expectations of many, Miss Bahamas World Tinnyse Johnson did not advance to the semi final round of the Miss World Beach Beauty competition. She along with several other favorites failed to make the cut, much to the surprise of many pageant experts and fans. Of the competition, popular pageant portal Global Beauties writes: Durban - It was a tough decision for the panel of international judges tonight when they had to select the contestants for Saturday`s Beach Beauty Final. The event was open to every contestant and standards were very high. The excitement and anticipation will continue until Saturday when one contestant is voted this year`s Beach Beauty and the first contestant to go through the semi-finals is confirmed. Through to Saturday s final, which takes place at the exclusive Beverley Hills Hotel in Umhlanga, are:- Angola; Australia; Colombia; Croatia; Egypt; India; Kazakhstan; Lebanon; Mexico; New Zealand; Paraguay; Philippines; Puerto Rico; Russia; Serbia; South Africa; Spain; Thailand; Trinidad & Tobago; Turkey; Ukraine; United States; Uruguay; Venezuela; and Zimbabwe. The winner of Beach Beauty will automatically advance to the semi finals. Shocking non inclusions in the "top 25" were Bahamas, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Uganda. The "Beach Beauty" title can be a blessing (Rosanna Davison, Miss World 2003 won this title and the crown) or a curse (Federica Guzman of Venezuela and Ada de la Cruz of the Dominican Republic were the winners in 2006 and 2007, but despite being major favorites, did not place past the top 15).

Included in their action packed itinerary was a visit to the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West, Soweto. Miss World 2007 Zhang Zilin, Miss World Organization chairman Julia Morley, and the sister of Hector Pieterson lay flowers on the memorial dedicated to memory of the 13-year-old who was killed during the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. The people of Soweto joined the Miss World contestants to see the wreath laying ceremony to remember those who have lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The largest cable-stayed bridge in South Africa, opened by Nelson Mandela, can be found in the heart of Johannesburg and is a symbol of South Africa's new democracy. The contestants also visited the Union Buildings which sit on Meintjies Kop, the highest point overlooking Pretoria which is the administrative capital city of South Africa. The Union Buildings form the official seat of the South African government and houses the offices of the President of South Africa. Their busy day of appearances concluded at Freedom Park where they ladies and Miss World Organization chairperson Julia Morley met residents of the Soweto township.
